London

Stupid terrorists. Londoners have been through the Blitz and through a generation worth of IRA terrorism. I can't think of a less effective target to try to attack if you're trying to scare people.

Also, this now gets Shrub and Blair out of the hot water they've started to be in due to people questioning Shrub's misadventure in Iraq. Sigh.

(And obviously, my heart goes out to the victims and their families.)

Most Londoners have not been through the blitz. My father was 3 years old during the blitz. He does say that he remembers it well, though. But he's 68.

Just to put that in perspective. Not at all the be contrary -- I agree that it wasn't the most brilliant of targets to choose.

No, but he was raised on stories of the Bllitz. It's very much a part of the culture of Britons, and especially Londoners.

My friends in London are all safe. I am thankful for that. Jen has a friend in London that hasn't been heard from as of yet, however. And, as you say, obviously my heart goes out to those who weren't so fortunate.

That said, the misadventures in Iraq just encourage this sort of thing. And while it will probably help Dubya, I don't think it will do much for Blair. The people who opposed the war will say that's why London was attacked, and they will be more steadfast in their opposition. All this will do in England is solidfy people's positions. I know that my friends aren't suddenly saying "oh, I must support Blair and the war now!" This is the difference between the British and the Americans. And, as you've pointed out, this isn't exactly something new for Londoners to deal with.

I wrote a post on this very topic. As thekumquat says, people have been trying to blow up London for 400 years. If you attack us, you make us stronger.

i don't see how. their misbegotten war has made terrorist attacks more likely, and this just proves it. it also proves that no matter how well prepared one might think a place is, and how experienced, that it's simply not possible to guard against any and all terrorist attacks.

but i am glad everyone i know is safe. it pointed out to me what a big difference there is in my general worries: i worry every day whether the couple of people i know in iraq are safe. i don't worry every day whether those in london are.
