I guess they didn't go to SARSstock

I had an appointment today (Thursday) to give blood. I'm type O+, and there's a blood emergency going on here. Did I give blood? No. They turned me away.

Why? Because I'd been to Toronto in the last month. Which, according to the American Fucking Red Cross, means that I'm a risk for SARS. Given my probable travel schedule, I'll pretty much never qualify to give them my urgently-needed and entirely safe blood, until they finally clue in and either take Toronto off the SARS list or get rid of it entirely.

BTW, Indians-Blue Jays this weekend, anyone?

I can never give blood, ever again, in my life.

Because I've had sex with a man.

The rule reads as such: "19. Male donors: Have you had sex with a man, even one time since 1977?"

Note that it doesn't even ask about protection, and there's no limitation on that.

I used to give blood every single blood drive. I have AB- blood -- it's one of the rare types. I have very rich blood. They used to love me.

Now I can never give it again.

Tell me about pissed off.

I express my outrage over this topic to the Red Cross every time I'm in there.

I've also heard many, many debates about the ethics of lying to them for their own good (or, more accurately, for the good of the patients who need the blood), in essence. I'm not particularly against it.

It enrages me that you could have had unsafe sex with two dozen opposite sex partners in the past week, and they'll still take you, but one safe-sex experience a decade ago, with testing every year since, and you're still not "clean" enough. Fucking homophobia.

Supposedly, they think that mtf donors are "male." I've made a point of never asking about that.

If you believe the ARC, the most dangerous behavior a man can engage in is having sex with another man in Toronto.

Silly buggers.
